The latest Brooklyn Bookworm x Friends NYC book club pick is Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno Garcia. The acclaimed author presents a mesmerizing feminist re-imagining of Gothic fantasy, in which a young socialite discovers the haunting secrets of a beautiful old mansion in 1950s Mexico. It’s Latinx Heritage Month, and this book is a perfect addition. Get your copy HERE, and join us on 10/20 at 6 pm EST to discuss on IG Live!
Each month, Alexis Patterson, aka @thebrooklynbookworm, selects a book by or about BIPOC women, and we meet up to discuss. She focuses on female characters for “their vision, their fearlessness, their originality, and (who) are just super fun to learn about.” This book club is about celebrating community and creating a safe space for new perspectives and empowering topics.
Why Alexis chose Mexican Gothic:
I thought this classic haunted mansion trope, with its fierce female protagonist, would be a fun way to kick off fall and Latinx Heritage Month. Set in 1950s Mexico, Mexican Gothic follows the fabulously sassy and defiantly headstrong main character, Noemí, as she journeys to the Mexican countryside to check in on her cousin Catalina after Catalina sends a troubling letter. What happens next is a highly creative and unexpected storyline. Author Silvia Moreno-Garcia delivers an utterly compelling, deeply chilling, and intensely creepy story. I verbally said, “Ew gross” a few times — a sign of fantastic writing. I also loved loved loved Noemí. She rejects all the 1950s social norms — she’s young and single, flirts, smokes cigarettes, and does not take no for an answer. Can you ask for more from a book??
We think not!
Tune in for a thought-provoking and fiercely feminist convo with Alexis and Friends NYC store owners, Mary Meyer and Emma Kadar-Penner.
Happy reading!
