This May our #VIF (very important friend) is someone super-duper special: Kimmy Bruce<3. Kimmy is not just a #bff of Friends, but is actual family-the sissy-in-law of Friends owner, Emma! This isn't Kimmy's first time being a Friends feature...we ran a giveaway of Kim's favorite self-care products a few months ago, and decided we needed more Kimmy content (we are obsessed with her TBH!). We chatted with the Canadian goddess about her go-to self care rituals and favorite beauty products, the positives and perils of being a vlogger on the world-wide-web, and her exciting new real estate career. Currently living: Toronto, ON, Canada.
Pronouns: She/her.
I am (current occupation): I’m currently working in finance - but I’m just about to get my real estate license! I’ve wanted to get into real estate for a while now and I know that it’s a career path that is much more aligned with my personality and drive in comparison to my current job. I also have a Youtube channel I started earlier this year where I talk about all things home and lifestyle related. Reach for the stars babes!
Go to self care when you’re feeling that lingering 2020 anxiety: Well right now we are under a stay at home order in Ontario…so I’ve had to get creative. Pre-pandemic I was the type of girl to visit my nail tech religiously every 2.5 weeks 💅. Self care for me looks different now and yes, my nails are totally busted. I’ve gotten really into skin care and I’m really loving face oils. Whenever I feel a bit of random anxiety coming on, I’ll head into my bathroom, take a long hot shower and do my skin care routine! I also have a Peloton so if I really need some motivation I’ll hop on and vibe with Alex Toussaint.
If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Definitely pasta. Any pasta.
Next vacation destination ASAP (post pandemic ofc): Turks and Caicos/Costa Rica for my bachelorette. My best friend, Lucas, who is basically my wedding planner at this point - is planning the most epic bachelorette trip.
Beauty trend I’m crushing on rn: I am obsessed with dewy skin, I feel like everyone is right now. Skin is SO in and I’m living for it. A fresh, glowing face is just so stunning to me. I’m basically a face oil hoarder at this point.
Who is an influential female muse/or major inspo in your life? Jordyn Woods is such a vibe. She pulls off so many dope outfits and hairstyles…and her SKIN is out of this world. But at the end of the day, Oprah is the OG boss. I love Oprah and everything she stands for.
3 essentials you can’t live without: Dior Glow Booster Serum, spicy margaritas, and my husband Jacob ♥️
Just finished binging: Just finished up Real Housewives of Salt Lake Season 1. Honestly loved it, the Jen Shah drama that’s currently going on does not surprise me…but I’m here for it!
Favorite Girl Group of All Time: Spice Girls
Last instagram account you followed? @freedom_moses_official - a company that makes the cutest two strap slides! They just did a collaboration with Jonathan Simkhai that’s super cute. I recently ordered the FM x JS slides in “Terracotta Tie Dye”.
What's your creative process for creating your YouTube videos? I’m totally all over the place. My current process basically involves me drinking a Venti Cold Brew, picking up my camera, and just winging it. I go into every video with a topic I want to talk about of course, but after that I just improv. My partner Jacob went to art school so he’s been helping me figure out what works and what doesn’t. I’m slowly getting into the habit of making a list of talking points so that my videos are more organized and direct. When brainstorming topics I like to think of what’s going on in my life (eg. renovating our home) and build a story off of that - so that each topic might pop up in several upcoming videos!
What is the biggest challenge to creating online content and putting yourself out there on the internet? Feeling like you’re not as “on” as other content creators may be. Social media gives us unlimited access to millions of peoples lives. It’s never ending! So when you’re constantly exposed to other peoples content all day you can start to feel like your content/life isn’t as good as someone else’s. I definitely feel like focusing on myself and realizing that someone else’s beauty/vibe doesn’t take away from my own allows me to push past those negative feelings.
Advice for someone who wants to be a blogger, vlogger, or influencer? Be confident and don’t feel like you HAVE to keep up with the Joneses. Know that not everything on social media is real, so just do you. Do what feels authentic to yourself and stick with it.
Anything new you’ve been working on or excited to see come to life in 2021 you wanna share? I’m super excited about getting into the real estate industry! I’ll be working with my partner a lot more (he’s a general contractor/home builder) which I’m definitely looking forward to. We are going to be bringing the world Selling Sunset vibes.
