It’s a simple concept: healthcare should be accessible and comprehensive for all. These are the principals that NYC’s Callen-Lorde Community Health Center was built on and continues to follow every day. A global leader in LGBTQ healthcare, the center is named after composer-singer Michael Callan and writer Audre Lorde and has been around — in some form — since the days of Stonewall. It also happens to be where Friends is donating a portion of our Pride collection sales this month.
Care for a quick history lesson? Here’s a little more about Callen Lorde. In 1983, two volunteer-based clinics, St. Marks Clinic and the Gay Men’s Health Project, merged. Each individually provided safe and confidential sexual health and primary care, regardless of ability to pay. Joined together as the Community Health Project, the new organization was a mostly volunteer-staffed, community-based HIV program. Eventually this would become Callen-Lorde. Today, the center provides high-quality health care services to New York’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities — still regardless of ability to pay. The center also promotes health education and wellness, in addition to advocating for LGBTQ health issues.
But Callen-Lorde can’t do what they do without help. That’s where Friends comes in. This year, we’re celebrating Pride month with a collection of all things love, fun, rainbows, and celebrity icons with our collection here, with a portion of all proceeds benefitting Callen-Lorde. So while we won’t get to hug and celebrate with you IRL, we hope these products (and a good cause) make up for it.
