There are eight million stories in the naked city, and this encyclopedic tome—a collaboration between New York magazine and the Museum of the City of New York—attempts to catalog them all. Or at least the ones worth remembering.

From the Algonquin Round Table to the Ziegfeld Follies, from CBGB to the High Line, this is the definitive compendium of everything that makes New York, well, New York. It's the kind of book that sits on your coffee table, demanding to be picked up and thumbed through whenever someone mentions a forgotten mayor, a demolished building, or that restaurant where Warhol used to hold court.

What's Inside:

  • Over 5,000 entries covering four centuries of New York history
  • Architecture, culture, politics, crime, and everything in between
  • The stories behind the neighborhoods, the legends, and the landmarks
  • Contributions from historians, journalists, and New York obsessives

Whether you're a lifelong New Yorker or an aspiring one, this is your field guide to the city that never sleeps—and never stops reinventing itself.

About the Author:

Founded by Clay Felker and Milton Glaser in 1968, New York was one of the earliest (and loudest) proponents of the New Journalism, launching the careers of Gloria Steinem, Tom Wolfe, Jimmy Breslin, Nora Ephron, and many others. More recently, New York has won thirty-six National Magazine Awards in the past two decades—more than any other magazine—and six General Excellence awards. The Washington Post has called it “the nation’s best and most imitated city magazine.”
